La Lune Noire

Designer: Kate Sorensen & Haylee Codina

Label: La Lune Noire

When did you know you wanted to become a fashion designer… We met and became friends whilst studying a fashion fundamentals course together here in Sydney. After a couple of joint stalls at markets around Sydney selling our individual creations, we started daydreaming about starting up our own little label. It wasn’t long before we had decided to create a small collection of singlets and leotards which we adorned with flouncing ruffles of brightly coloured silk. We sold them mostly to our friends but it was such a success that we decided to do a larger run. It was from there that La Lune Noire was born and it had slowly transformed into the unique boutique label it is today.

Which fashion designers inspire you… International – Balmain, Balenciaga, Chloe, Prada. Australian – Ginger and Smart, Sass and Bide, Manning Cartel.

I would describe my style as… We both have our own individual style, but neither of us follow rules when it comes to trends. We prefer to dress in what we feel comfortable in and what suits our body shape which is what we feel every woman should do. If that involves an amazing neon or lilac then we jump on board the trend train, but we are also big fans of classics with accessories.

We are inspired when… we look at the world around us, this, like fashion changes daily and it is so important as a designer to keep your finger on the pulse. We most commonly draw inspiration from photography, art and design. A random moment captured in time either through a photograph or a piece of artwork can hold in it the inspiration for an entire collection. Our inspiration board is crammed full of photographs, illustrations, gift cards and fabric samples of things we both have come across that inspire us, all of these items in one way or another inspire our collections. The great thing about it is there are two of us, each bringing our own inspiration to the table. It is an amazing collaboration, the best part of the process!

The best advice anyone has ever given us was… Never give up on your dreams.

In five years time we hope to be… an established Australian label. This would mean larger collections being supplied to local boutiques on a much larger scale. We love what we do and can’t wait to see where the journey takes us!
